Comforter
explores gray areas surrounding female health, sexuality, and intimacy. Functioning as both an artist book and a collection of short stories, the volume organizes twelve plates of paintings alongside seven works of fiction. Through sinister portraits of orderly domestic life alongside stories of female protagonists controlling and not controlling their bodies, Comforter delves into themes of hypochondria, consent, bedside manners, gynecological afflictions, Freudian hang-ups, and nontraditional definitions of motherhood.

I made this book, and the works in it, at the Galveston Artist Residency in Galveston, Texas, in late 2019 and early 2020. The dustcovers were printed on a Vandercook Model 4 by Pilar Nadal at Pickwick Independent Press in Portland, Maine. The publication of this project was made possible with generous support from the Idea Fund. The Idea Fund is a re-granting program administered by DiverseWorks, Aurora Picture Show, and Project Row Houses, and funded by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Half of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to the National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda.
